There are three major types of beans: bush beans, pole beans, and runner beans.
As the names suggest pole and runner beans need support. Bush beans can be grown without any support at all. Harvest bush beans when they snap when bent, and before seeds become visible in the pods. Harvest snap beans often to keep them producing new pods. Pole beans are best left on the vine until they are large and thick. Runner beans can be eaten young like bush beans or left on the vine to dry. Dried beans can be stored and used in soups and stews.
