This barrel cactus, like many in its family, is covered in neat-looking rows of spines. The blue barrel has a lovely blue-grey skin. Lemon yellow, funnel-shaped flowers appear on the crown of the cactus and are impressively long-lasting. Blossoms transform into a distinctive, white fruit.
Blue barrel stays relatively small, making it the perfect candidate for a dish garden or by itself in a good-sized pot with ample drainage. It also does well in the landscape, tolerating mild frosts alongside plants like globe mallow, black-spined prickly pear, and desert marigold.
