Glossy Privet is an evergreen standard, widely used across the southern United States as hedges, screens, windbreaks, and accents. In Tucson, they are most commonly seen as hedges, as they are extremely well-suited to heavy pruning with their dense, glossy foliage and intricate branching patterns. Glossy Privet can also be grown as a small but picturesque tree with smooth grey bark and an umbrella-shaped canopy. Clusters of lightly fragrant, yellow to whitish flowers appear in spring and develop into ornamental black berries. These berries are a major food source for birds, but they can stain patios or walkways, so place Glossy Privet in the far reaches of your garden and enjoy them from afar!
