Native to Northern Mexico, this tough evergreen has been adopted into southwestern landscapes as a large background shrub or small patio tree with an exceptionally long flowering season. From March through October, Mexican Bird of Paradise is covered in flushes of lemon-yellow spikes of fragrant flowers that are a favorite source of nectar for hummingbirds and butterflies.
More frequent and profuse flowering can be encouraged by pruning off the seedpods that form when the flowers are spent, and by giving the plant a good drink of water every week or two throughout the blooming season. In milder winters, the brilliant green leaves will cling to the thornless branches, lending a tropical ambiance and ensuring year-round interest in your garden.
