In my garden, and many gardens across the Southwest, this herbaceous shrub is “Hummingbird Central” from spring until first frost. During this long, exuberant blooming season, Mexican Honeysuckle is constantly abuzz with visits from hummingbirds and even some intermittent butterflies! All of this activity is focused around the clusters of tubular, neon-orange flowers that stand out starkly against large, vibrant-green and velvety leaves. With a naturally compact and rounded form, Mexican Honeysuckle needs very little seasonal pruning to maintain. Try a single specimen in a container to highlight the plant’s coarse tropical texture, or plant them in groups to amplify the color and liveliness of the extended blooming season.
