Penstemons are a large group of plants composed of many wild species found growing in a variety of climates, as well as numerous hybrids that have been developed for a wide range of characteristics. Grown exclusively by Civano Nursery, ‘Red Headed Beauty’ is a new hybrid variety of Penstemon that was introduced by Russ Buhrow of Tucson. This genetic mash-up of (Penstemon palmeri x parryi) x superbus was selected for its outstanding array of purplish-red flowers, and for its superior vigor and longevity. The lightly fragrant flowers, featured on 5-foot spikes with nodding tips, are larger than those of any of its parents, but just like its parents, they attract lots of hummingbirds!
