This super cold hardy sunflower relative is native to Arizona and the Chihuahuan desert. Its evergreen foliage smells like turpentine when crushed, which makes it unattractive to rabbits and deer. Bright-yellow flowers that draw butterflies grace the top of this shrub in late summer and fall.
It grows well in areas with native and rocky soils that receive little water, maintenance, or protection from wildlife. For impressive fall bloom and nice foliage, give Turpentine Bush a little extra water in the late summer. Plant in a location with intense reflected heat or sun with other native flowering shrubs such as Brittlebush and Globe Mallow or pair with statement plants such as Giant Hesperaloe or Red Yucca!
